Opening Shift: New Opportunities for Young People
The UK Labour Government has launched Opening Shift, a new work‑experience programme delivered in partnership with some of Britain’s biggest retailers.
The scheme will offer 18–24‑year‑olds valuable hands‑on experience with major employers including Tesco, Asda, Aldi, Boots, Costa, M&S and Currys. It’s designed to help young people build confidence, develop practical skills and take those important first steps into work.
Young people in Merthyr Tydfil and Aberdare will be able to take part through their local Jobcentre, a real boost for those looking for a pathway into long‑term employment.
Food, Fun and Friendly Faces in Aberdare
The Aberdare Food Festival was a real treat, bringing a brilliant atmosphere to the town and plenty of excellent local produce. It was great to be there with Vikki Howells MS and Cllr Sheryl Evans, and to see so many people out supporting local businesses.
There was also a lively moment when members of the Colstars Theatre Sister Act cast appeared in full costume, promoting their upcoming show at the Theatr Y Colisëwm, Aberdâr. They certainly added some fun to the day.
A big thank you to the organisers, Our Aberdare, for delivering another excellent event. Aberdare always comes alive for the festival, and next year is already something to look forward to.
Access to Cash in Our Communities
Bank and building society closures, along with the loss of post office branches, are making access to cash increasingly difficult for people across Merthyr Tydfil and Aberdare. This is having a real impact on residents who rely on local, face‑to‑face services.
It’s important that communities receive the support needed to maintain access to cash locally, particularly in areas where alternatives are limited.
Merthyr Valley Veterans Visit Parliament
It was a pleasure to welcome the Merthyr Valley Veterans back to Parliament. The group spent time in the Palace and on the Terrace, where there was plenty of conversation, shared stories and laughter.
Their continued service to our community is deeply valued, and it’s always an honour to recognise their contribution whenever they visit.
If you or your community group would like to arrange a visit to Parliament, please get in touch.
Plaid Cymru Committed to Independence
Plaid Cymru have now set out their continued commitment to Welsh independence. This won’t come as a surprise, but it does highlight a position that most people in Wales simply do not support. Independence is widely seen as unrealistic and as something that would leave Wales worse off.
It’s important that we focus on practical, achievable ways to strengthen Wales, not proposals that risk making life harder for communities.
Disability Confident Event at Merthyr Jobcentre
The Disability Confident event at Merthyr Jobcentre was a great opportunity for employers, partners and staff to come together and support local residents who may face barriers to finding work. I was pleased to open the event and meet those involved in helping people access good, secure employment.
A huge thank you goes to the Jobcentre team for organising such a positive and welcoming event, and to everyone who took part. The day highlighted the importance of practical support and collaboration in strengthening our communities and ensuring people can access the opportunities that work for them.
The First 100 Days
Plaid Cymru’s first 100 days in government have been noticeably quiet, with little meaningful action reaching communities across Wales.
By contrast, within just six weeks our new Labour Prime Minister has shown active leadership, engaging with people across Wales, listening to concerns, and taking practical steps that are already making a difference. It’s a clear reminder of how important it is to have a government focused on delivery and improving people’s lives.
Visit from South Wales Women’s Veterans
It was a pleasure to meet members of the South Wales Women Veterans group in Parliament, along with colleagues, including Margaret from Merthyr Tydfil. By coincidence, they were visiting at the same time as the Merthyr Valley Veterans, giving both groups the chance to meet, swap stories and share a few laughs.
It was wonderful to see everyone enjoying their visit and spending time together in Parliament.
Upcoming Jobs Fair at Cynon Linc
Vikki Howells MS and I will be hosting a Jobs Fair on:
📅 Friday, 9 October
⏰ 10am – 1pm
📍 Cynon Linc, Seymour Street, Aberdare, CF44 7BD
The event will bring together employers and support organisations to help residents explore new opportunities, access advice, and take the next step towards work or a career change. Whether you’re starting out, returning to work or looking for something new, the Jobs Fair is open to everyone.
Advice Surgeries
As well as my work in Parliament, my team and I are available to assist constituents throughout the year with a wide range of issues, including benefit entitlements, HMRC matters, housing concerns, Home Office cases and passport applications.
I also hold regular advice surgeries across the Merthyr Tydfil and Aberdare constituency. These provide an opportunity for residents to discuss issues where I may be able to offer advice, support or assistance.
To discuss a specific issue or book an appointment, please contact my office on 01685 383 739 or email Gerald.Jones.MP@parliament.uk.
Details of upcoming advice surgeries are regularly shared on my website and social media channels, so please keep an eye out for dates and locations near you.
